Panchakarma Treatments

The traditional ayurvedic Panchakarma therapies mentioned below may be involved in the treatment program designed for you. A combination of some of these therapies may be advised by the Ayurvedic Physician based on the Pulse Diagnosis.

Vamana (Use of emetics)

Elimination of vitiated doshas through the mouth by giving emetic decoctions. This procedure is effective in curing disorders related to Kapha pre dominance such as shwas (Asthma), kasa (bronchitis), peenas (sinusitis), Kushta (skin problems), upper respiratory tract diseases, indigestion and obesity.

Virechana (Purgation Therapy)

Virechana involves administration of purgative substances for the cleansing of Pitta through the lower pathways. It is useful in healing kushta (skin problems), arsha (piles), krimi (worms), shwas (asthma), headache, backache, vibandha (constipation), jaundice, tympanitis etc.

Basti (Herbalized Enema)

Basti is the most important procedure in panchakarma. Owing to its extensive purifying as well as healing potential, Basti is regarded as the most effective procedure among all the other treatments. This procedure helps to remove toxins from the colon by giving specialized herbal enemas.It is useful in eliminating Vata related disorders, like sandhivata (joint pain), pakshaghat (hemiplegia), grudhrasi (sciatica), ardita (facial palsy), kampavata (parkinsonism) etc

Nasya (Nasal Administration)

During Nasya, herbalized oil or ghee is administered through the nose by a special method. In Ayurveda, the nose is described as a gateway to the brain. This procedure addresses various respiratory and allergic conditions. It is useful in reducing various Central Nervous System related conditions.

Abhyanga (Oil Massage)

Abhyanga is a type of external oleation therapy. This procedure involves a massage with specially herbarized oils according to the imbalances and constitution of the patient. For a healthy individual, an ayurvedic massage is said to strengthen and balance the whole physiology, improve circulation, vitality and rejuvenate the skin. Abhyanga most importantly enhances heart health and improves the inner healing mechanism.

Swedana (Steam Bath)

Swedana is the process of inducing sweat with the help of steam, generated from medicated herbal decoctions. The word Sweda in Sanskrit means ‘to sweat or to perspire’. This treatment improves muscle elasticity and facilitates removal of toxins. Balances Vata and Kapha doshas, increases circulation and relieves stress.


This is a process of gently pouring specially herbalized oils/decoctions/buttermilk/milk on the forehead.This procedure calms the mind and body. Shirodhara is effective in alleviating neurological disorders and in reducing stress and fatigue.

Udvartana (Herbal Powder Massage)

Udvartana is a massage with specially herbalized powders mixed with or without oils, in centripetal direction. Udvartana is good for losing weight, reducing unctuousness and increasing metabolic rate.

Pinda Sweda

In this procedure, hot rice is packed and tied in a cotton cloth (rice cooked in special decoction and medicated milk) and is massaged with special strokes over the affected area or all over the body. Pinda sweda removes stiffness and provides nourishment to the skin, bones and muscles. It is also useful in treating multiple sclerosis, muscular dystrophy, hemiplegia.

Pizhichil (Sarvangdhara)

This treatment is regarded as a Royal Treatment’. Gently pouring oil all over the body like an oil bath with a light massage. This treatment is particularly useful in all vata disorders (neurological disorders), joint pain, hemiplegia, prostate related problems, fatigue, etc.


Kati Basti is a procedure in which warm medicated oil is poured and kept over the lumbosacral area or any adjacent part for a certain period with the help of a ring prepared from dough of black gram flour. The oil penetrates deep into the skin and muscles which reduces pain and constipation.

Urobasti (Hridbasti)

This is a heart rejuvenating Treatment. Lukewarm medicated oil/decoction is poured and kept over the heart in an elevated cabin prepared from dough of black gram flour for a certain period. This procedure improves circulation and strength of the heart. Urobasti is effective in combating heart diseases and circulatory disorders.


In this procedure the knee joint is bathed in warm medicated oil. This is especially helpful in curing knee joint pain, osteoarthritis, osteoporosis.
